Identify the action before naming the fee
A percentage charge on a centralized exchange trade is not the same measurement as the gas consumed by an Ethereum transaction. Start by naming the step: buying, selling, sending on a network, using a contract or withdrawing through a service.
An on-chain swap may involve both network and application or liquidity-provider costs. This guide does not price that workflow. It uses Ethereum gas terminology for a bounded example, not a universal fee model for every blockchain or scaling network.

Keep gas units separate from the price per unit
Ethereum’s gas documentation distinguishes work measured in gas from a price expressed per gas unit. For the simplified base-fee-plus-priority-fee case, total execution charge uses gas actually consumed, not simply the maximum gas limit entered.
One gwei is one billionth of an ETH. The example below assumes 21,000 gas used and a combined 15 gwei per gas. Those are invented inputs for the calculation, not a current network quote or a guarantee for any transaction type.

Calculate each component in its own units
With those assumptions, 21,000 × 15 = 315,000 gwei, equal to 0.000315 ETH. If a separately invented conversion price is $2,000 per ETH, that becomes $0.63. The dollar value depends on the chosen conversion price and time.
A separate invented $1,000 exchange trade at 0.20% costs $2 in the fee model. The amounts cannot be described as competing prices for the same service: one illustrates execution work, the other a percentage of trade notional.
| Component | Assumption | Modeled amount |
|---|---|---|
| Ethereum execution | 21,000 gas × 15 gwei | 0.000315 ETH |
| USD conversion | 0.000315 ETH × $2,000/ETH | $0.63 |
| One trading leg | $1,000 × 0.20% | $2.00 |
A service withdrawal line may not equal raw network cost
Coinbase’s pricing disclosure describes an estimated network-fee charge for certain sends and notes that the amount paid by the service can differ, including because of batching. That product-specific disclosure should not be converted into a universal withdrawal rule.
Inspect the actual provider breakdown, asset, network and account terms. Keep a service charge distinct from any underlying execution estimate. Do not count a bundled component again just because a receipt also describes the mechanism behind it.
Use the percentage tool only for the supported component
In the exchange fee comparator, set notional and an explicitly assumed percentage to model the trading leg. The tool does not accept gas used, gas price, network selection or an ETH/USD conversion input.
Its same-notional round trip is two trading legs, not a withdrawal plus a network transaction. If a separate worksheet adds other costs, state their currency, source, observation time and whether they are estimates or charged amounts. Unknown lines stay unknown.

Avoid turning a worked example into an all-in quote
Network conditions, execution work, provider charges and conversion rates can change independently. The simplified gas equation here does not cover every network or all possible transaction charges; the 21,000 value must not be pasted onto an arbitrary contract operation.
Keep fictional labels with any excerpt and revisit the source for the particular workflow. Comparing units and scope helps explain a receipt; it does not forecast costs, recommend a venue or establish that a transaction is suitable.
