Separate the interface from the authority
Ethereum’s wallet explanation distinguishes an account/address from the tool used to interact with it. A displayed balance or a familiar app interface is not, by itself, evidence of who can authorize a transfer.
Private signing material must remain secret. An address used to receive or identify activity is not the same thing as that secret. Public visibility also does not mean an address should be casually linked to a person’s identity.
Evidence: Ethereum wallets, accounts and keys
Ask who controls the relevant keys
In a third-party custody arrangement, access depends on a service and its terms. A password reset for that account is different from reconstructing lost self-controlled signing material.
The Investor.gov custody bulletin explains that self-custody shifts key-security responsibility to the user and that key loss can mean permanent loss of access. This guide does not decide which arrangement is appropriate for a particular reader.
Read responsibilities rather than labels
For any custody arrangement, identify who can initiate transfers, what recovery process is documented and which other parties or systems are required. Distinguish an actual contractual term from an advertisement.
A hardware device, a multi-party arrangement or an insurance statement is not a universal guarantee. Scope and exclusions matter. This article has not inspected a service’s controls, legal entity, financial condition or your own setup.
| Question | What remains to verify |
|---|---|
| Signing authority | Who can authorize movement and under what conditions? |
| Recovery | Which evidence or secret is required, and who can help? |
| Dependencies | Which service, device, software or other party is needed? |
| Terms | Which restrictions, exclusions and jurisdiction apply? |
Keep recovery and signing secrets out of requests for help
Do not send a seed phrase, private key or signing credentials to CryptoTrades, an unsolicited support contact or a newsletter form. No example in this guide requires you to generate a wallet or disclose a secret.
A general article cannot validate an individual recovery attempt. If a purported helper asks for information that would let them sign or recover your assets, recognize the authority that disclosure could give them. This is a conceptual warning, not a recovery procedure.
A manual portfolio is a separate kind of record
The CryptoTrades portfolio tracker records manually entered labels, units, prices and average costs in this browser. It neither holds an asset nor proves control of one. It does not connect to an exchange or wallet.
An exported holdings file can still reveal private financial information even though it contains no signing keys. Protect it accordingly. Editing a tracker row does not transfer funds, establish ownership or change the underlying custody arrangement.
Keep a custody note without storing secrets in it
For education, write down the arrangement, sources checked, review date and unresolved responsibilities. Keep secrets out of that research note and use fictional examples if sharing it for feedback.
Legal rights, provider eligibility and recovery options depend on facts outside this guide. Do not infer regulatory protection or suitability from a registration, familiar brand or interface. Use qualified help where the question requires individualized judgment.
