ASSET RESEARCH · SOL

Solana, beyond the price.

SOL funds transaction fees and staking, with documented payment experiments and an issuance-policy change that needs careful dating.

Purpose and token role

Solana supports programs and token-based applications. SOL is used for transaction fees and staking. SPL tokens are separate assets whose mint and freeze authorities can differ; using Solana does not make every token on it equivalent to SOL.

Supply and issuance

SOL has ongoing inflationary issuance rather than a fixed terminal supply under the documented model. The staking FAQ lists the original 8% starting rate, 15% annual disinflation, and 1.5% long-term rate. These are schedule parameters, not today’s yield. A newer Foundation report says SGP-0002 passed, raising annual disinflation to 30%. We have not verified its on-chain activation or a current inflation rate; the older FAQ must not be treated as a complete current schedule.

Adoption evidence

Visa’s September 2023 announcement added Solana to its USDC settlement capabilities and described live pilot activity involving issuers and acquirers. This is a concrete, dated payment-infrastructure example. It does not establish the present share of Visa settlement, everyday SOL payments, or a count of unique users.

Risks and limitations

Anza’s incident report documents an approximately five-hour halt in block finalization on February 6, 2024, followed by a coordinated restart. This historical incident demonstrates availability risk, not a claim that the network is currently down. Fee prioritization, application permissions, and ongoing issuance also deserve scrutiny. Token activity alone does not establish durable demand for SOL.

Our transparent assessment

Interpretation of the cited evidence, not an overall score. The same three dimensions are used for every asset.

Supply clarity: Policy update to verify

The older FAQ and newer governance report differ. Activation must be checked before projecting future supply.

Adoption evidence: Reported live pilot

Visa identifies real settlement experimentation. This profile does not extrapolate it to current network-wide usage.

Risk focus: Availability and implementation

A documented halt makes client reliability and recovery important research questions.

What remains unverified

Current inflation, governance-change activation, current settlement volume, and bot-adjusted usage have not been independently verified.

Project and participant publications can have commercial incentives. We have not independently audited their claims or measured adoption. None of these examples establishes a future price.

Questions for your next research session

  • Has the approved issuance change been activated, and which live parameter source confirms it?
  • Does the activity metric exclude validator votes, bots, and repeated transactions by the same user?
