Create one row for each complete scenario
Record a scenario label, direction, account balance in USD, risk percentage, entry price and stop price. Add columns for calculated units, risk budget, notional, assumptions and review date. Download an editable plain-text worksheet and worked CSV from Sources & method.
Keep account balance and risk percentage separate: the first is the model’s dollar base, while the second selects a fraction of it. Use invented balances while learning. Do not paste a worksheet containing personal finances into a newsletter form or support message.

Reproduce the result before comparing rows
Risk budget equals account balance × risk percentage / 100. Units equal that budget divided by absolute entry-to-stop distance; entry notional equals units × entry price. Record units as units of the modeled asset, not dollars.
For a fictional $10,000 account, 1% risk, $100 entry and $95 long stop, the budget is $100, distance $5, units 20 and notional $2,000. This is a simplified scenario, not a recommended risk percentage, asset or trade.

Change one assumption at a time
The table uses a fictional $10,000 balance and $100 entry throughout. Compare the first two rows to isolate the selected risk percentage. Compare the second and third to isolate stop distance. The short row uses a stop above entry.
These are separate alternative scenarios, not positions to combine. A row set does not model correlation, shared collateral, existing holdings or several stops executing at once.
| Direction / stop | Risk % | Budget | Units | Notional |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Long / $95 | 0.5% | $50 | 10 | $1,000 |
| Long / $95 | 1% | $100 | 20 | $2,000 |
| Long / $98 | 1% | $100 | 50 | $5,000 |
| Short / $105 | 1% | $100 | 20 | $2,000 |
Preserve the exposure warning in your notes
With the same balance, 1% risk, $100 entry and a $99.50 long stop, the uncapped result is 200 units and $20,000 notional. The tool warns that calculated exposure exceeds account balance. It does not silently shrink the position.
An output above available funds is not an instruction to borrow, and a smaller nominal stop distance does not make execution safer. The worksheet should preserve the warning beside the result rather than remove it when copying the numbers.

Add a separate execution sensitivity column
The sizing formula assumes the selected stop price for its distance. For the 20-unit long case, a hypothetical $94 exit instead of the $95 stop creates a $120 price loss before fees: 20 × ($100 − $94). That is a separate stress calculation, not an output field in the position tool.
Label that column explicitly as a scenario outside the sizing result. Fees, slippage, borrowing, funding, liquidation and taxes are not included in the position calculator. A stop cannot guarantee an execution price or a maximum account loss.

Save assumptions, not just the largest number
Retain enough decimal precision to reproduce the calculation and label any display rounding. Real venue minimums, quantity increments and buying power are separate constraints; the calculator does not validate them.
The worksheet is a manual review aid. It is not saved by the position tool or uploaded to a provider, and it does not track orders. Compare rows to understand sensitivity, then revisit any missing inputs rather than interpreting a mathematically valid result as approval to trade.
